Beer numbs the pain…

2006-12-11 (Monday)

… especially after a final where you arrived 45 minutes late because, well, fuck, because you repeated the same mistake as that other final the previous week.
One more left… and don’t even start with the date jokes.

Brain no werky

2006-10-28 (Saturday)

Upon a much, much closer look, it has become apparent to me that my latest compilers assignment doesn’t actually involve coding some complicated piece of a compiler-compiler chain. Indeed, part 1 of the assignment does not involve coding at all, if I so choose.

Although there is programming involved in part 2, it is adding new features to the previous assignments, and does not involve too much. As for part 3, it’s MIPS assembly, which is, well, different.

This vast difference between my expectations and actual requirements have put my brain into a state of absolute confusion. I am currently experiencing a surprisingly strong urge to start writing C++ code, yet I am also very much aware that there is no need for any code at all until I reach part 2.

There is only one possible solution to this dilemma: I’m going to bed.

Valuable lessons learned

2006-10-03 (Tuesday)
  • When the assignment due date you wrote down seems suspect, do double check it before the week that you think it’s due.
  • When switching from C++ to C, remember that C is lazy.
  • References in bound-dead-tree form are good
  • Having references in general is good
  • Web references are sometimes not so good
  • manpages downright suck if you don’t know what you’re looking for
  • C != C++
  • When starting assignments early, try to do it for not just one class
  • Start taking care of coop early, like, half-a-year before you want to start working early
  • It’s only the beginning of week 5 — better shape up, or I am beyond fucked
  • My desk-setup is good for my back and wrists, but not at all for my neck

So close…

2006-09-25 (Monday)

After about a couple dozen too many hours, over 900 lines of new code, and lots of finger food, I’ve finally produced something that almost conforms to the specs of my second compilers’ assignment. There’s still one major bug, but I’m willing to let it be until the morning.

Six more assignments to go!

(I’m gonna die…)

Oops…

2006-09-18 (Monday)

Despite having been planning for months to try and get away from various responsibilities, it would appear that I’ve once again gotten myself elected to something, only this time, it’s within the SFSS it self, instead of just the CSSS. It’s not that I’ve failed to shed my previous responsibilities, per se, but that my net loss of responsibilities is not quite as high as I had originally planned.

On the bright side, it is a position with stipend; I’ll probably really need that extra bit of financial help in a couple of months.

Let the exam period… begin?

2006-08-13 (Sunday)

CMPT 383 final tomorrow morning, at 8-fucking-30. This will be my first write-in-a-class-room final for the semester, followed by another on Wednesday at, again, 8:30.

The rest of the week will be interesting as I need to get my laptop shipped to Ontario for exchange with the defect replacement, while still needing a computer to work on FroshWeek things.

Ugh…

Rawr

2006-08-12 (Saturday)

All work and no biking makes Yang a sad geek.

It’s just not a good time for me to have to think about and work on FroshWeek and everything else that’s going on in my life.

Finally!

2006-08-03 (Thursday)

As of today, as far as I’m concerned, the school semester is over aside from two finals, which are both too far away for me to start worrying about just yet.

Now, I can focus on dealing with the things that need more immediate attention, like getting this bloody laptop replaced with a non-defective one, find a place to live, make sure we’re ready for FroshWeek, and get a few more bike rides in before the summer’s over.

Good and bad

2006-07-27 (Thursday)
  • Whistler trip cancelled: boo!
  • New laptop should arrive sometime on Friday: yay!

  • Just over half a week to complete said assignment: shit.

12-credit semester

2006-07-25 (Tuesday)

Due to a scholarship trust fund my parents put me on, and my desire to aquire the last batch of money eligible to me from said trust fund, I will actually be taking four courses in the Fall in order to qualify as a 4th year in January. 4th year, IIRC, is equivalent to haveing completed 85 credit hours of courses, which I will be short by one were I to take three courses as planned originally.

Now, this worries me slightly, as bad things occured the last time I took a four-course semester with three upper division computing courses. However, as I have freed myself of quite a few major non-academic responsibilities in the last two semesters, things will hopefully turn out a lot better this time around.

Nevertheless, don’t be surprised if I fall off the face of the Earth come November…
