Nine-to-Five

2007-01-01 (Monday)

After some struggling with Translink’s Trip Planner, it has been determined that my commute to work is going to take roughly an hour and a half, when appropriate buffers for transfers are factored in. This means that my nine-to-five day is more like seven-to-six. Which is okay, really, except for the lack of anything really interesting to visit, like, say, civilization, once I clock out, without some non-trivial time spent on a public transportation vehicle or two.
Hopefully, the work is going to turn out as interesting as I am expecting it to be.

Tomorrow, I must awake at quarter-after-six in the ante meridiem in order to arrive at my place of employment in a timely manner for the work day to begin.

Beer numbs the pain…

… especially after a final where you arrived 45 minutes late because, well, fuck, because you repeated the same mistake as that other final the previous week.
One more left… and don’t even start with the date jokes.

Oops…

Despite having been planning for months to try and get away from various responsibilities, it would appear that I’ve once again gotten myself elected to something, only this time, it’s within the SFSS it self, instead of just the CSSS. It’s not that I’ve failed to shed my previous responsibilities, per se, but that my net loss of responsibilities is not quite as high as I had originally planned.

On the bright side, it is a position with stipend; I’ll probably really need that extra bit of financial help in a couple of months.

I’m back!

Internet was hooked up today.

Yays for internets!

Moved!

2006-09-02 (Saturday)

After some exhausting packing, moving, and last-minute moving-company hiring (for extremely cheap) curtesey of Mom and Connections, I am now officially moved out of my parents’ house as of September 1st.

There’s still more of my stuff that needs to be moved, and I’ve yet to order us internet, but, otherwise, we’ve settled in nicely at our new place. I’ll be going back-and-forth between my new place and my parents’ for the next while moving whatever else I need, and bum an internet connection to get some business done.

Finally, here’s my horoscope until next Thursday, according to The Georgia Straight—I got a pretty good giggle out of the first part:

You’ve got some downtime. Use it to contemplate what your’re going to do this fall. Rest up and enjoy, for soon you will be busy putting your projects together. September 1 is a day of unique happenings.

Victory is mine!

At last, I’ve succeeded in setting up a Debian router with CUPS and Samba.

As it turns out, the reason why Samba wasn’t talking to CUPS was because the spool directory did not exist. I’m sure I would have figured this out much sooner had I turned up the logging level while configuring. Eh, it didn’t take too long to figure out. Otherwise, everything has turned out fine after a proper upgrade to testing, except printing via CUPS to the multi-function network printer (a non-issue) and the fact that CUPS’ web interface is completely non-functional when it comes to adding new printers.

Incidentally, today is the more-or-less official start of Missy and I’s renting agreement with our new landlord. Now that this Debian box is up and running, I no longer have to worry about leaving my parents with a non-functioning network once I take away the wireless router, and focus on more pressing matters, like organizing last-minute FroshWeek details, and figuring out how to get all of my crap over to my new place of residence.

We won!

2006-08-27 (Sunday)

After several weeks of down-right frustrating house searching, Missy and I have finally found a place of our own to move into come September.

Hoorays!

All work and no biking makes Yang a sad geek.

It’s just not a good time for me to have to think about and work on FroshWeek and everything else that’s going on in my life.

Right down to things…

2006-08-04 (Friday)

Lenovo has been called, and my replacement is on its way, so to speak. Gotta love IBM support: no hassle, no phone tag, no getting the run-around. The Indian folks on the techsupport line was a little bit of a challenge to deal with, as the phone multiplies the accent by about 5, but my interaction with them were either pleasant or very minimal.

The bad news, of course, is that I’ve managed to hit the September backorder yet again. My replacement won’t be arriving for another 3 to 4 weeks, but the machine I have now must be back in Lenovo’s posession before the end of the month.

On the house hunting side of things, despite my laziness (and Missy’s unwillingness) to actually call and inquire about accomodations, we did manage to arrive at a (very) short list of places we are going to investigate further. If you’re one of the people hoping to move into North Burnaby for the fall, and don’t mind sharing a space with a couple, a bunch of rodents, and a trio of bikes, let us know so that we can include larger places in our search.

Finally!

2006-08-03 (Thursday)

As of today, as far as I’m concerned, the school semester is over aside from two finals, which are both too far away for me to start worrying about just yet.

Now, I can focus on dealing with the things that need more immediate attention, like getting this bloody laptop replaced with a non-defective one, find a place to live, make sure we’re ready for FroshWeek, and get a few more bike rides in before the summer’s over.
